We are well under way with the golf season now and this week sees the start of the 3rd major of the year, the Open at St Andrews. Last time the Open was held at the home of golf in 2010 Louis Oosthuizen cruised to a 7 shot victory and his first, and so far only, major Championship.
This year it maybe is a bit harder to predict the victory with Rory McIlroy out of action for some time after he ruptured his ankle ligaments playing football with his friends. I can't blame him for wanting to lead a 'normal' life, but when something as innocent as a kick about has caused him to miss an event this big, you have to question the decision to play football. It reminds me of Paul Casey and how good a player he was before he injured his shoulder in a snowboarding accident... look how long it has taken him to get back to some sort of form! As it turns out McIlroy's injury did not come from a hard challenge, but simply catching his studs awkwardly on the astro-turf.
So far this year I have not done very well when it comes to predicting the players who are going to perform well in the majors, so please take the following advice with a pinch of salt.
Luke Donald - Has been playing much better over the last few months and performed very well in the Scottish Open with 4 rounds in the 60's. Got a great temperament and at 90/1 I will be having an each way bet.
Louis Oosthuizen - Winner last time the competition was played at St Andrews so knows what it takes to win. Would have won the US Open if it was not for a poor start and I feel that the course will have similarities to Chambers Bay
Rickie Fowler - A great comeback with three birdies in his last four holes in to win in Gullane, maybe now is the right time for Fowler to make that final step to becoming a top top player.
Jordan Spieth - The best golfer on the planet at the moment so it's hard not to bet against him, especially after another win this weekend. Will playing in America the week before and the pressure of the grand slam looming be too much for him? Probably not!
This week I have been planning a summer of golf for all the Juniors in the area with some fantastic Summer Camps. These have proved very popular in the past so make sure you book your child's place early to avoid disappointment. These sessions will take place on each Friday of the Summer Holidays from 1-4pm and at £10 is great value for money.
